Karumba Festival of Sport - Ready to Play Our Way

Did you know that in 2026, the Karumba Festival of Sport in its current form combining Hockey and Basketball will celebrate 25 years of Impact.

Cairns Hockey and Hockey Queensland partnered back in 2001 and one of the first areas of delivery was Gulf Savannah. There were no facilities, equipment or awareness of hockey, female participation was law and since 2015, Cairns Hockey through Aspire to be Deadly led delivery programs that are community -led, culturally respectful and focused on mentoring, participation, health, education and leadership.

  • It features inter-school competitions, such as basketball and hockey involving schools like:

    • Gulf Christian College

    • Normanton State School

    • Croydon State School

    • Georgetown State Primary School

    • Karumba State School

  • Through the years Doomadgee, Burketown and even Kowanyama has attended and shared these experiences.

  • Organized by Aspire to be Deadly, the festival promotes healthy lifestyles, teamwork, and community spirit among youth in the Gulf region.
